Friday night’s meeting will be a presentation by Gordy Smith KE8JKS on the work involved to prepare CMARC’s communication trailer for deployment. Gordy, and his brother Jeff, have done considerable work inside the trailer to make a comfortable working environment for operating radios from a remote location. Gordy and several other individuals also worked on the trailer brakes which needed a complete overhaul.

The trailer will be in the church parking lot for inspection. This will be a great time to view the work done so far and to evaluate and discuss what is left to complete, such as what radio equipment should be installed, what antennas should be installed, possible solar panels and charge controller, etc.

This is your chance to offer your suggestions for the CMARC communications trailer. Ultimately, we want a communications trailer we can transport to various venues for demonstrations and presentations – venues such as schools, fairs, other groups, etc.

Friday night’s meeting will be a presentation on grounding and bonding by H. Ward Silver N0AX. Ward Silver has been a ham since 1972 when he earned his Novice license (WN0GQP). His experiences in ham radio led him to a 20-year career as an electrical engineer, designing microprocessor-based products and medical devices. In 2000, he began a second career as a teacher and writer, leading to his receiving the Bill Orr Technical Writing Award in both 2003 and 2016. He was inducted into the CQ Contest Hall of Fame in 2015 and in 2008 was recognized as the Dayton Hamvention’s “Ham of the Year”.

Ward is Lead Editor of the two primary amateur radio technical references, both published by the American Radio Relay League — the ARRL Handbook and the ARRL Antenna Book. He is the author of all three ARRL licensing study guides and writes QST magazine articles, receiving the QST Cover Plaque for most popular article four times. He has written two other Wiley titles, as well; Two-Way Radios and Scanners, and Circuitbuilding Do-It-Yourself. His most recent ARRL book, Grounding & Bonding for Radio Amateurs, will soon release a second edition. He has also written the mildly amusing ham radio detective mystery, Ray Tracy: Zone of Iniquity.

On the air, he enjoys DXing, contesting, building antennas, and participating on his local emergency communications team. He is a founder of the World Radiosport Team Championships and President of the YASME Foundation’s Board of Directors. Outside of ham radio, Ward plays the mandolin, dabbles in digital photography, and enjoys biking, camping, and canoeing or kayaking (not at the same time).

Gregg will describe some history about past Field Days, and Dan will update everyone about this year’s Field Day plans.

If you want to learn more about this year’s Field Day plans, or would like to participate in CMARC Field Day this year, then you won’t want to miss this meeting, either in person or via Zoom.

Friday night’s meeting will be a presentation about the history and purpose of the Lansing Civil Defense Repeater Association (LCDRA) organization and the Amateur Radio Public Service Corps (ARPSC) organization. This presentation will be hosted by Jeff Goeke-Smith KC8PUN and Dan Beuchert WX8MOJ. Several inquiries as to why there are so many ‘Radio Clubs’ in the greater Lansing area have come from many new CMARC members, as well as some older members. Jeff and Dan felt it was time to explain the purpose and goals of these other organizations to CMARC members to establish a greater understanding and awareness of these other Lansing based organizations.

Another reason for this presentation is to consider any opportunities for all these Lansing based amateur radio organizations to better work together for common goals. This is espically important with regards to soliciting grants for monies and/or equipment for various activities.

Dennis Dann KE8ACA

First a Husband, Father and Grandfather with a devout Christian Faith. Then a thankful CMARC member, thankful for the social friendships and shared knowledge of fellow radio operators. I’ve been a corporate drone previously and self-employed Manufacturers Rep since 1994 retiring in 2008. Currently continue as a Firearms Trainer and DNR Hunter Safety volunteer since 2012.

The greatest training experience: I’m a Michigan Jaycees Past President which is America’s finest Leadership Training Organization, please just ask me sometime.

Most CMARC members express interest in projects. Those who step up, lead us have kept us going. It’s my turn to step up, serve and grow it. Won’t promise to get you involved, just create the atmosphere and the opportunity for you.

Looking forward, to serving and achieving the goals of 2022 Board of Directors. My goals, to have CMARC a greater service to the community, create greater social value for all members and a base for future members to grow their radio communications skills.

Thank you for all past Board of Directors who served and are serving today.

Daniel Dembinski KD8YDE

I have served you as Vice President the past two years. I have enjoyed working with you, and for you. I am asking for a chance to serve you and our club again and set goals and raise the bar on the club. I am wanting to move forward on the grant writing. I want to move forward with what the building committee has worked on.

2022 is going to be our finest hour! As just individuals not a lot can get done, but as a club pulling together, we can get it done. So, I say to you let’s get it done together in 2022!

Gregg Mulder W8GG (formally WB8LZG)

I have been a ham since 1972 and have been a member of CMARC ever since. I’ve made radio a priority in my life for many years now and have been active in many ham activities such as Field Day, SSTV Nets, and Club contesting. I’ve had the pleasure to teach electronics at LCC and Antennas at Michigan State University for many years. I’ve been happily married to my XYL, Vicki, for 40 years, and we are both retired now. We have been blessed with 2 harmonics. My favorite radio interest is CW, and I try to operate daily. I also enjoy QRP operating and low power contesting.

Michael Wetzel W8QF

I became interested in Ham in high school but not licensed until March of 2019. I earned General and Extra a year later. For almost fifteen year I served as a senior-pastor. I taught writing at LCC for almost 15 years. Founded, “Shepherd’s Purse” ministry to orphans, widows, and the poor almost 19 years ago and currently serve full time as the Executive Director. Our target area is Ukraine, but we also built an orphanage in India and supported that for 10 years. I have been married 50 years this year to Shirley, have four married children (3 in full time ministry), and ten grandchildren. We have lived in Lansing for about 25 years. We have also lived in the U.P. (10 years), Atlanta (GA), Grand Rapids, Vestaburg, and Three Oaks. Sturgis, MI is my hometown. In March I turn 70 years old. Love ham radio and enjoy experimenting with antennas.

Daniel Beuchert WX8MOJ (running for under 22 director)

I am running for the Under 22 Director spot on the CMARC Board to help bring a youthful focus on CMARC’s current and future operations. My daughter of 11 years is currently working on studying to pass her Technician license test and hopes to complete this in December. Because she is much farther under 22 than I am and she is motivated to serve on the CMARC Board, I will recommend that the board and membership consider her as the Under 22 Director after she has received her call-sign and gained membership in the club.

I have previously served on the CMARC Board of Directors as a director, treasurer, and president. I am currently serving as an Assistant Emergency Coordinator (AEC) for the Lansing/Ingham ARPSC and have been elected as President of LCDRA effective the first of 2022. I enjoy public service volunteering with amateur radio (Skywarn and events), ARRL Field Day, and the connections made through the hobby. I’ve been licensed since late 2009 and active in CMARC ever since. I look forward to the opportunity to help CMARC focus on the youth, which are the future of our hobby.

Jeff Smith Receiving Loop Antenna

March 13th, 2020 7:00 p.m. @ Michigan EMS Educational Services, 807 Kerns Road, Mason, Michigan 48854

The next monthly meeting of the “Central Michigan Amateur Radio Club” will be on Friday, March 13th at 7:00 p.m. at the Michigan EMS Educational Services, 807 Kerns Road, Mason, Michigan 48854. Our program for March will be a presentation by Jeff Smith (Gordy Smith’s brother) showing and demonstrating a box loop receiving antenna he built.

Jeff’s hobby is rebuilding old radios from old battery sets, console models, all American 5 and 6’s of the 1920’s to 1950’s. He also rebuilds old 7″ black and white TV’s from the 1940’s. He has quite a collection of rare and vintage receiving equipment.

Jeff is currently working on his ham licensing.

He has extensive knowledge of electronics, especially with old vintage vacuum tube stuff.

This antenna Jeff built is a form of a magnetic loop. It was fashioned after a 1960’s popular mechanics article about “building your own directional AM radio antenna”.

This classic antenna has been modified to be completely remote controlled. It will turn by rotor 360 degrees, tilt from 90 to -5 degrees, and has a motor drive tuning capacitor from a custom made control head.

Our findings with the Rig Experts AA-600 show it can become resonate from 500 KHz to 3.56 Mhz. It would work great for DX receiving which he loves to do.

With its sharp nulls and extreme selectivity, it will almost completely eliminate a local class “A” AM broadcast station while pulling in a weak one from several states away.

Don’t miss his presentation of this piece of radio history.

The CMARC club is working hard to bring you quality presentations.

If you are not a club member, or were a club member in the past, but are not current, we encourage you to come back and give us another try.

We have something for everyone. Come check us out.

Sincerely,

Gordy Smith, KE8JKS
CMARC club president.

Also, a friendly reminder that you can pay your 2020 membership dues ($20) at Friday night’s meeting.

Carl Canfield K8YHH

Carl has been a ham since December 22, 1960, and still loves amateur radio. He runs the Sunday night slow scan TV net, and has been doing so for almost 10 years. Carl is active on HF, VHF, and UHF Bands. He loves to operate CW, SSB, many of the digital modes, amongst others. Carl has previously served on the Board, and will do his best for YOU, the club members. He encourages everyone to have fun with amateur radio and learn while doing so.

Shannon Ranes WA2NVK

Shannon was licensed as a Technician nine years ago, in December 2009, and received the call sign KD8MOH. She now has a vanity call sign, WA2NVK, which belonged to her great grandfather. She has been involved with CMARC since 2008. Julie McLain’s Tuesday night Ladies Tea Time Nets began her regular use of the 145.39 repeater. She planned Ladies Night 2009 and 2011 and has been involved with Field Day Food since 2012. She currently helps provide refreshments at our monthly meetings. She says, she and her husband, Chris Ranes (NS8Q, formerly KC8CAJ), a ham since 1995, encourage and support each other in ham radio related activities and events. She enjoys contesting at Field Day and at home with Chris. She is currently studying to take the General class license test.

You can read more about Shannon in the “What’s My Sign” column on page 2 of the October/November 2010 CMARC SCOPE Newsletter: “Whats My Sign” – Shannon Ranes

Outside CMARC, her experience as a team member on various committees and boards began in high school and continues to this day. She works for a student travel company, planning educational and performance trips for groups. She is also active in her church with kids, youth, adults, and music.

Gordy Smith KE8JKS

Gordy has not been a Ham for very long but has an extensive background in HF radio transmitters, broadcast television, electronics repair, and telecommunications. After high school, Gordy began his electronics training in a two-year vocational program. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served for six years on the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. During his Navy service, he spent four years working in the “on board” broadcast facility, taking care of the studio cameras, lighting, videotape machines, audio, and video production equipment, RF distribution system, and the TV and radio sets used by the 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard the ship. Towards the end of his enlistment, Gordy has applied for a duty transfer to the onboard HF transmitter room where he maintained and repaired the HF transmitters and their associated antennas and matching equipment.

After his honorable discharge, Gordy joined the RCA Service Company, where he worked for four years running road service on TVs and other consumer electronic products. Later he joined the commercial and telephone division, where he was involved with various commercial system installations, including satellites, paging, telephone, voice mail, antenna, RF headends, for the health care and lodging industries.

Since that time, Gordy has worked for various other large interconnect companies and in 2003 started his own electronics and telecommunication company. His electronics hobby and work experiences have given him a vast array of disciplines , and he is always willing to help others learn and grow in the electronics and communication fields.

Currently, Gordy holds a General class license and is studying for his Extra. He teaches a bi-weekly electronics class held at the CMARC meeting location. He strives to help others learn and to promote the hobby of HAM radio.

Dave Vick W8ZZX

Dave Vick is a 35-year veteran of the Entertainment Industry; a freelance Theatrical Technician currently traveling in the US on touring Broadway musical productions. When he’s not touring somewhere in the world, Dave lives in Lansing and works on the backstage crew of the Wharton Center for Performing Arts at Michigan State University, among other theatres and concert venues around the State of Michigan. Dave often works as a stage rigger; one of the people charged with suspending thousands of pounds of lighting, sound equipment, and scenery over the heads of performers and audiences. Dave was the first rigger to be Certified for both Theatrical Rigging and Arena Rigging in the State of Michigan, and only the 427th Certified Rigger in the US and Canada.

Dave first developed a love of two-way radio work in the CB craze of the early 1970s, but let it slip away as he left school. The love of electronics stayed with him, though, allowing him to work on many of the highest-tech show-biz automation systems in the world. Dave earned his Tech ticket in March of 2018, immediately progressed to General Class in May of 2018, and advanced to Extra Class in July of 2018, at the CMARC Outdoor Hamfest in Holt. He enjoys rag-chewing and contesting on HF, primarily 40m and 80m, and can also be found in the evening Lansing area nets on 2m – 145.39 and 146.70. He runs a Yaesu FT-897 transceiver and MD-100 microphone on an Alinco DM-330MV power supply, driving a 134’ End-Fed Half-Wave long wire HF antenna and a homebrew Open-Stub J-Pole for VHF and UHF, and he plans on raising a 6-band HexBeam on a 48’ tower in the spring… Maybe; he is also saving up for an Icom IC-7300, and he sports a Yaesu FT-60R dual-band VHF/UHF H/T in his car. He also enjoys designing and engineering all sorts of homebrew antennas for HF and VHF frequencies, and recently served the CMARC group as Chair of the Beam Antenna Replacement Committee.

In addition to amateur radio, Dave enjoys riding his old British Royal Enfield motorcycle, doing graphics work on his computers, shooting competitive skeet and sporting clays all over Michigan, designing and reloading high-performance shotgun ammunition for competition, and is a member and Past Master of a few area Masonic Lodges and appendant groups.

Don McLain KB8RAD

Don has enjoyed being a Ham for the last 25 years and an Extra class operator for the last 20. He has been a CMARC and an ARRL member since he was first licensed in 1993. Over the years, he has served on the Board of Directors of CMARC for a combined total of 14 years. He has been involved in many CMARC activities including holding the following positions: Vice President, Club Contact, Youth Liaison, New Ham Contact, Chairman of the CMARC Speaker/Entertainment Committee, and the CMARC Facebook Group Admin. Don was also awarded the 2011 Ziegenbein Award. In addition to these activities, Don serves on the Board of Directors of the Lansing Civil Defense Repeater Association (LCDRA) and is an active ARRL Volunteer Examiner and the Founder and Host of “RAD’s Coffee Break”. He really loves Ham Radio and his CMARC Family and it will truly be a great honor to serve you on the Board, once again.

CMARC 2015 Christmas Potluck

John Doornhaag KD8NNQ

Hi, I am John Doornhaag KD8NNQ. I am married to Paula Doornhaag and have a son and daughter and two grandchildren. I am a retired Maintenance Supervisor for Speedway, for whom I worked for thirty two years.

I have been a ham since 2010, at which time I studied and got my extra class license. I also joined CMARC in 2010. In 2011 I went on and got my VE certificate. I am now the head VE for the Ingham County VE Group.

I was a director on the CMARC board in 2013 and 2014. I did not run in 2015 due to shoulder and back surgery. Never having any type of surgery before, I was not sure how much this would interfere with my position on the board, so I decided not to run at that time.

I would like to be on the board again, because I feel this board can help CMARC accomplish many great things and I would like to be a part of that.

Thank you for considering me for the CMARC board.

Jimmy Dunahoo KD8IWQ

My Call is KD8IWQ( Kilowatt-Delta-8-I-Won’t-Quit). I have been a General class Ham since 08-25-09, as well as a member in good standing with CMARC for over 2 years. I have helped out with the Outdoor hamfest for a couple of years also.

I am no stranger to leadership, as I was President of the Lake Station Jaycees in Porter County Indiana for a year, Secretary, Treasurer of the Alert Firefighters association, in the lower peninsula of MI for 1 year being elected the next year to Vice President for the next year and President for the next year.

I was a Journeyman Millwright for 34 years before retiring from GM in Lansing in 2005. While there, I had the privilege of being chosen to be on the Emergency Response Team and served with them for ten years and when I retired, I retired with the rank of Lieutenant.

I also served as Associate Chaplain for six years before retiring.

Since retiring I have stayed busy in prison ministry, and drove clients to medical appointments for about a year for the Michigan department of Human Services.

I would consider it an honor to be able to serve on the executive board of CMARC, if you would allow me to be your servant, by voting me in.

Thank you very much for your consideration & 73’s.

Russ Fitzgerald N8FZ

I am Russ Fitzgerald N8FZ. I have been licensed since 1977 and an Extra since 1982. I have been a CMARC member for most of those years.

My interests in the hobby include HF Dxing, contests VHF/UHF and I am very strong love of CW. Also included in my interests are Skywarn and VE testing locally and for many years at the Dayton Hamvention with the Laurel, MD VEC.

I see many opportunities for the club in the coming year. I want to continue my “dress up” of the club station. I would also like to see an expansion of club fellowship activities. For example, ” A new ham barn raising” This comes from an idea I got while at Dayton. The idea is to take a new( or existing) ham and spend a day setting up a station from the equipment to the antenna. Many hams who are new to the hobby quickly become overwhelmed with all there is to do. I think this would be a great way to introduce this person to who we are as a club and give them a chance to meet new friends within the hobby.

I would also like us to be more visible when we are at events or involved in service projects. This could easily be done with bringing back club jackets or polos.

Julie McLain KB8ZXR

Hi, my name is Julie McLain/KB8ZXR. I’m a General Class Ham and on June 7th I celebrated my 20th year of being licensed. I’ve been on the Board of Directors of CMARC on-and-off for many of those years. In addition to being a past Club Secretary, I’m now CMARC’s President, the Coordinator of Ladies Activities, Chair of CMARC’s Annual Hamfest, Chair for the Ladies Night Banquet, I write monthly articles for the SCOPE and I’m the Founder and Net Control of the “Ladies Tea Time Net”. I’ve also been the recipient of the Ziegenbein Award and I’m an active Volunteer Examiner. As you can see, I’ve been intimately involved with most aspects of the Club and Ham Radio and would find it a great honor to once again, serve on the Board of Directors in the coming year. One of the things I love most about Amateur Radio is the ever increasing Ham “Family”. It amazes me to watch the easy way that friendships are made in this great Hobby, despite our diverse education, employment, and heritage – Amateur Radio just brings us together into one big Ham Family!

73, Julie McLain KB8ZXR

Don McLain KB8RAD

Hello, my name is Don McLain, KB8RAD. I’ve been a Ham now for 22 years and an Extra Class for 17. I’ve been a CMARC member since I first got my Amateur license. Over the years, I’ve served on the Board of Directors (on and off) for a total of 13 years. I’ve been involved in many CMARC activities since becoming a member, including: Vice President, Club Contact, Youth Liaison, New Ham Ambassador, and Chairman of the CMARC Speaker/Entertainment Committee. I was even awarded the 2011 Ziegenbein Award. My term on the Board is currently expiring and I’d love to be reelected because I love CMARC so much and it’s such an honor to serve you!

73, Don McLain KB8RAD

Sam Fitzgerald N8FPR

Hi My name is Sam Fitzgerald N8FPR. I am currently your Under 22 director. I was first licensed in 2009 getting my tech when I was 9. I later got my General when I was 11. Now between band and school I am working on my Extra.

As a youth in this club I now see the challenges of bring others into the hobby. We are buried in homework at school and have other activities. I think one way to bring more youth in is to form bonds with other youth groups. The Boy Scouts for example. Many troops in the area would be a perfect fit with Field Day.

Related to that is that I think the role of Under 22 director should be expanded to a liaison for the MSUARC and CMARC. We should form a stronger alliance between the two groups.

The future of youth in the club is going to depend on each and every member to ask themselves if there are any young people who might be interested in the hobby of ham radio.

Larry will be presenting a program on the ARRL’s Centennial (which will include a video), because this year, the American Radio Relay League is celebrating 100 years of “Advancing the Art and Science of Radio.” He will explain how the ARRL, from its meager beginnings in 1914, has become the national association for Amateur Radio in the USA and is the largest organization of Radio Amateurs in the world!

All of this against the backdrop of the annual “CMARC Summer Potluck”! That’s right, it’s time again for our “INDOOR PICNIC” and just like last year, the Club is springing for the hot dogs and brats with all the fixings, and members are asked to bring anything that makes for a good Summer picnic like potato salad, baked beans, potato chips, beverages, etc. And let’s not forget all the yummy desserts, either! We are SURE to have good food, good fun and good fellowship, so come on out to the August meeting for the social event of the Summer! Using digital modes to communicate, you can send and receive some of the digital mode signals below the noise floor of your receiver—which means being able to receive messages that you can’t even hear! Fldigi also has the ability to use auto-message forms to send and receive emergency traffic messages and have them on your computer screen to save or print. These are a type of message which allows you to send and receive chat modes. If you have a PC and a rig, come to our August meeting on Friday the 10th and learn how you can explore the world of digital communication! We are certain to have a great time!! July 13th, 2012 7:30 p.m. @ The Salvation Army-Capital Area

Greetings!

The next monthly meeting of the “Central Michigan Amateur Radio Club” will be on Friday, July 13th at 7:30 p.m. in the Salvation Army building, located at 701 W. Jolly Road in Lansing. Our program speaker for July will be none other than CMARC’s own Gregg Mulder/WB8LZG, who will be discussing the “Bruce Array”. This antenna has been around now since the 1920’s, but has been largely forgotten by many Hams, except for some like Gregg, who have used it with great success at Field Day. This is going to be a very interesting and informative meeting, so come on out and join us!.

Thanks and 73,
Donald L. McLain – KB8RAD
CMARC Vice President
