The Central Michigan Amateur Radio Club will host two “you build
it” classes for both club members and the public (up to 20
spots). This is a chance to explore the art of radio direction finding
-and- building the proper equipment to participate in what we call a
“FOX HUNT.” This is a fun project and you will wind up
with some great equipment that you can show off to your friends.
In our first class, on December 3rd, 2022 we will build a
hand-held directional antenna called a Yagi. The exciting part of this
is that the antenna is made up of some PVC tubing, some clamps, glue,
coax, and a standard tape measure element.
The second part of this project is to build a small electronic circuit
board that connects the antenna and your hand-held radio to reduce the
signal for pinpointing the “Fox” (the hidden transmitter)
you are very close to. This device is known as an offset attenuator.
You will build (solder) components to a circuit board, and our
instructors will help guide you even if you have never soldered
before.
We have had a great interest in this project build and want to make
sure we can give every interested person the opportunity to sign up
for this event.
The total cost for both classes will be $30.00. Our first class (the
antenna build) will commence on Saturday, December 3rd,
2022, 9am-2pm. This class will last about 2 hours but we have included
extra time. Our second class (the offset attenuator build) will be
held on January 21st, 2023 and if we need to split the
class, our second date will be January 28th, 2023, times
are all 9am-2pm. Classes will be held in the gymnasium at the West
Lansing Church of Christ in Delta Township. The street address is 5505
West St. Joseph Highway, Lansing, Michigan 48917. This is the exact
location we currently hold our monthly club meetings.
